It was joked about in “Knocked Up” but for some it is a major issue in electing a new president. For me it really isn’t an issue at all as it does not relate to my life in anyway. I have a son, and am not planning on having anymore kids but If I were to I wouldn’t be upset. So this is really a non issue for me.
But to take sides and spark debate. You go do what you need to do. I don’t like it, I don’t want to hear about it, but if you feel it is what you need to do do it. Everyday I see protesters in front of planned parenthood with signs that show dying feti (singular fetus?) and it makes me sick. But I don’t feel it is my right to take away your right to choice.
What do the candidates think?
Barack Obama
Opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v Wade. Disagreed with Supreme Court ruling to uphold the “Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act.” Did not cast a vote on Prohibiting Funds for Groups that Perform Abortions amendment in 2007.
John Mccain
Voted for the Prohibit Partial Birth Abortion bill in 2003 and “yes” for Prohibiting Funds for Groups that Perform Abortions amendment in 2007. Believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned. Supports Supreme Court ruling upholding the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act.
Two very different opinions and it seems that Obama supports your right to choose which is more along my lines of thinking. It is not my place to take away your right to make a decision about your future. Partial birth abortion in my eyes and is an atrocity however, so I would also have to take side with Mccain on that part of the issue.

Abortion is a touchy issue. We could debate the morality of it forever. But I don’t think the morals of the action is enough to legislate it. From a strictly Constitutional look at our laws, the government really shouldn’t have any say in it and therefore… this is a non-issue. If you don’t like abortions; don’t get one. If you love abortions; boil me some water and bring me the tongs.
This may come off as a very liberal opinion (since when does liberal have a negative connotation?) however liberal and liberty have the same root. So my question is: Why do you hate liberty? Why do you hate freedom?

But morality is the entire issue. If we decided what was legal and illegal based on the constitution (which we should)then we wouldn’t have silly smoking and trans fat bans placed upon us. Or for that matter even seatbelt laws.
So is it morality or legality that we are arguing when it comes to abortion?

obviously not Representatives as they don’t represent your views. Also, now that you have knowledge will you elect representatives to repeal those bans?
Every Law or ban that is passed takes another freedom from you specified by the constitution. You are giving your freedoms away freely to some entity that isn’t doing its sworn oath (to uphold the constitution).

I think there may be confusion with federal legislation and local laws. No federal entity posed smoking bans (which I know irritate the patriot in Adam M). These restrictions came about at a local level.
There are several different ways to interpret the Constitution. Some might say that the framers deliberately drafted an elastic document because they could forsee a changing nation. Those with this perspective might say that Congress and the Supreme Court are interpreting “rights to privacy” AND the right of the federal government to legislate the morality of its citizens. Neither of those issues are clearly mentioned in the original document or amendments.
If I have to weigh in on this issue at all, I would say I support the legality of FIRST trimester abortions for two reasons. The first is apolitical…completely emotional. I believe women will seek out illegal abortions and run into unscrupulous practitioners, which will harm a current citizen as well as a future one. I also concur with the original argument in Roe v Wade that a fetus is more a part of the mother until it is medically able to survive outside of the womb (with or without medical intervention). So it sounds harsh, but if you haven’t made a decision within the first trimester, live with your mistakes for a time and then allow a childless couple to raise your child.
