Maximize Your Space

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By minimizing your clutter.

The words, aka the content of your site, are the most important parts of it.  It is what search engines see, it is what users read, it is the lifeblood of your site. Yet you spend more time creating images than you do content.

I am a fan of simplistic design, I like white space, straight lines, and sharp corners.  It is the way my house, my office, and my website look.  I may not have the most readers, or the most popular website on the net, but the one compliment I get more that any other is that people like my site because it is clean and easy to read.

When developing your site you must remember that in order to mazimize your space and get the most out of your content you must remove the extras that clutter it up.

Images are a wonderful thing, and they add a dynamic to your site that plain text can’t. As a designer I know this full and well.  Yet I can’t stress enough that even the best graphic in the world can detract from your site when placed incorrectly.

So how do you maximize your space and remove the clutter?

Seperate your graphics from your content.

Many bloggers love to have an image associated with each one of their posts because it allows the reader to take a break.  This is good, yet bad.  Most bloggers don’t take the time to do it right and you end up with 400px of graphic with 100px of text squeezed in to the right of the image and between the margin of the div.  Place your images wisely so they don’t junk up your text.

Move Your Ads

It would be horrible I know your ctr would drop tremendously, but what is worth more to you a few dollars or a happier reader.  If you are going to advertise within your text I would reccomend using a content link system and not some pick ad image or block advertisement that really just ads crap to your site.

Use A Sans-Serif Font

Serif Fonts are very pretty, but truthfully unecessary for web applications.  Your reader will have an easier time reading a not serif font and your site will look cleaner without millions of tiny text tails everywhere.

Keep Your Widgets On The Side

Websites are generally categorized in columns ( 2 column, 3 column designs ) keep your sidebar outside of the main column.  Don’t try to add to many widgets into your posts.  If readers have to scroll too much to get from article to article they may not do it.

There are many ways to design a website and many ways to design it well.  I hope you find some of these tips to keeping a design clean and simple helpful in your design process.

LogoBlog.org is Garbage

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Yeah, I said it, but you don’t have to take my word for it, check the site out and make your own decision if you want, but I think you will agree with what I have to say.

I am writing this today because I am sick and tired of having comments removed from sites simply because you either post a link to your own site in the comment or the author of the site is ridiculous and deletes it because they don’t agree with your opinion.

A few days ago logoblog came out with a post detailing the wonders of the new xerox logo and as you may or may not know I think the new logo is garbage. (My Reasoning Here)  Anywho I went to the site read the article as I do with most of the articles on logoblog because it is something I am interested in, and then I decided to leave my opinion in the form of a comment.  You know that little area underneath the posts where authors ask for your opinions.  Well apparently mine wasn’t in agreeance with what the thought police over at logoblog had in mind so they removed it.

This was my comment on the post.  Not verbatim of course because I can’t remember it completely but you will get the point.

Adam (Me) says…

I think the new Xerox logo is garbage, it is bubbly and web 2.0.  I never thought Xerox needed something flashy for you to know who they were.  I wrote a post about this on my blog a while back when the logo first debuted if you want to see the other reasons why I didn’t like it please check out (inserted link to site).

So if you are the author of logoblog and are for some reason find yourself reading this post and still have a copy of my comment please send it to me so I can show my readers the exact qoute you thought couldn’t be on your site. It wasn’t spammy and didn’t have any inappropriate language in it.

I was a moderate fan of logoblog but now have decided that it isn’t worth mine or your time so here are some more reasons it sucks.

  • Horrible Theme - a slightly modified version of the default wordpress theme.  Way to go there guys.  I am supposed to take your word on the creativity and the importance of a design and you can’t even create and design one for yourself.
  • Free Logo Maker - If you are going to offer a free service such as logo design try to take some time and have it do something besides add a dropshadow to a font.  Or at least don’t say you are an authority on logo design and then try to pass this shit off as a logo.
  • A Free Ebook - Wow this sounds great… I would love a good ebook about logo design. Wait they are not giving away a free ebook they are asking you to give them free information so they can compile it and then give it back to you all while making advertising money.
  • Simply put they are liars -  Their about us page describes how they provide up to the minute logo news and unbiased opinions.  Unless you can back that up don’t print it.  You update the site once a week, which is almost never up to the minute information, and you remove comments you don’t like which hardly ever leaves room for unbiased debate and discussion.

I am sorry for my rant, but I am so tired of bloggers deleting comments if it is not warranted.  If you didn’t like my link remove the link, if you disagree tell me why don’t be a wenis and delete what could lead to a good discussion.  If you like logoblog or don’t let me know why.  If you are logoblog defend yourself.

An Interview With Gino Orlandi!

You The Designer

Many of you may not yet know Gino Orlandi, but if you are interested in graphic design there is a good chance you know his site youthedesigner.com.  Gino is a self proclaimed “internet entrepreneur” with the soul of a graphic designer and an entreprenuerial spirit.  Gino, has recently been willing to take some time out of his busy day as a student, designer, and web entrepreneur to sit down with me and answer some of those burning questions about what has made him and his sites so successful. But before we get into it lets take a look at what he has done.

Gino currently runs 3 websites 2 of which are growing quickly and producing high quality content with a strong fan base the third being an extremely professional portfolio site.  The first I already mentioned www.youthedesigner.com  a weblog dedicated to bringing you quality content about graphic design tools, tips, and whats new in the niche.  You The Designer is unique and informative in many ways which is why he currently has over 1,800 people that subscribe to his blog on a daily basis.  One of my favorite parts is how he has monetized his site.  Using a creative 16 x 16 px advertisment system that he created himself.

The second site is www.yourdesignforums.com a graphic design community where you can come and give and get help with your projects as well as learn about monetization, optimization, and all other web and graphic design related topics.  With over 400 members and 179 active members the forums are growing and producing quality content quickly so I recommend checking them out.  Oh and don’t forget to mention that Creadiv sent you.  I would like to see a few referrals in my profile.

The third is www.ginoorlandi.com which is his professional portfolio.  A sleek and to the point portrayal of his quality web design, identity creation, and graphic design work.

Now that you now a little background information what do you say we get to meet the man that is creating these useful and popular websites.

Mr. Orlandi From my perspective I have found that you wear many hats, a bit of a jack of all trades.  You have a journalistic nature with your blog, you are a student of design, and an entrepreneur in your business.  If you had to give your profession a title, what would you say it was?

I guess I would call myself an Internet entrepreneur although I started off and mainly am a graphic designer. I have really started moving into other areas such as blogging, and starting other online businesses. The Internet is the key to the world for me. It has opened up so many opportunities, all from the comfort of my home.

Right now in your career/profession what are you finding to be the most important influence and how is it affecting the facets of your life? Such as school, the blog and the forums.

I would have to say my family and friends are a big influence in terms of giving me the drive to keep working as hard as I do. My family and friends have always been very supportive and I hope in the near future I can return the favor and be successful enough to help them out as much as possible. If you don’t have a very strong drive you will never accomplish your goals in life.

What advice do you have for someone whom is starting school, a blog, or an internet business?

First of all you need motivation and you need to be able to keep that motivation. You will have to put in a lot of long hours so make sure you know what you want in life. I would also recommend that you explore as much as possible. It took me a while to figure out what I was interested in. Once you know what you are interested in, start your research and never stop learning. Read as many articles and books as you can. I usually keep a steady pile of articles next to my desk that I print out from websites and blogs. Lastly I would recommend networking. Meet as many people as possible in your area of interest. I have met many amazing people online who have helped me out a lot.

Writing can be a difficult hobby/profession; you need inspiration and dedication especially when you don’t have a large audience. You mentioned your friends and family, but is there anything specific that you do to stay motivated?

I think I just have a strong entrepreneurial spirit. I get a rush from seeing a website or business grow and all I want to do is keep improving my websites so I can achieve my goals.

Other than motivation writers often need some tricks and tips to get articles done.  Did you have a schedule for writing or can you recommend any practices that might benefit a new blogger?

I keep a large list of bookmarks of sites related to graphic design including a section of bookmarks for post ideas. I keep a written schedule of future posts so I know what I’m going to do each week. It often changes, so keeping a written list really helps.

You mentioned that you have met a lot of people and read a lot of great articles.  Do you have a recommendation of a person to watch for or a great article to read?

It’s hard to pinpoint any one person or article, but if you are interested in blogging I would check out problogger.com and also freelanceswitch.com is great for general freelancing and business advice.

Your blog is definitely thriving, when you started it what was your primary focus?  Did you build tutorials, conduct interviews, or simply discuss your opinions?

My primary focus when I started was posting about design resources such as websites and books which I still do, but I have expanded and now post about a wide variety of topics to keep things fresh.

It would be naïve to believe as a blogger that you will just sky rocket to success, what do you feel has been your best tool in marketing the blog?

I would have to say providing quality content in general or networking with people in my niche.

What about the small stuff?  I know that a lot of time marketing a blog is spent commenting on other’s blogs and helping people in forums, but are there any small things that can really help generate some good traffic?

Yeah, I would research your niche as much as possible. There are always news sites and social media sites you can use to your advantage. Also offering free stuff and hosting contests can help.

You are currently promoting a pretty great competition on your site, could you tell me a little about it?

Sure, it’s a vector poster design competition hosted on my blog and sponsored by UPrinting.com and iStockphoto.com. To read more about it and to enter simply go to: http://www.youthedesigner.com/contest/

Competitions seem to be very popular in driving traffic on the blogosphere, could you give some advice on how to get a good sponsor?

It’s mostly about the traffic your website or blog gets, but most sponsors won’t just come to you. You need to at least make it clear on your site that you offer ad spots or seek out sponsors yourself. Don’t be afraid to email people!

Mr. Orlandi, is there anything else you might like to stress to the readers about your site or anything you might like to make sure they know about?

Yeah thank you, I’d like to mention the graphic design content I’m currently hosting again:
http://www.youthedesigner.com/contest/

Also be on the look out for my new t-shirt blog and clothing line, which I will announce on my graphic design blog in the near future!

Thank you very much for your time, I appreciate your advice and honesty.

You are welcome, and many thanks to you as well!

Statistics Are Robbing Your Blog.

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Benefit Your Blog by Using Your Stats Correctly

Statistics are the thief of your blog’s success because you spend too much time analyzing and hoping and not enough time thinking and writing.

Your goals as a blogger are to produce an income stream that will rival the best in the business.  You want 15,000 subscribers, A bounce rate under 20%,  your return visit rate above 10 visits per person and the most important statistic; revenue to be enough to maintain a happy and fruitful lifestyle.  But you are robbing your blog of that exact success by caring too much.

You spend 30 minutes a day at least checking awstats, google analytics, commission junction, kontera text ads, text-link-ads, google adsense and feedburner… just to see how the blog has performed that day.  But what you didn’t realize was that you wouldn’t need to so closely monitor these stats if your blog was truly performing.

Yes statistics are beneficial and relevant, but you don’t need to see what your Alexa ranking is twice a day.  Take your mind of off the stats and help your blog by giving those 30 minutes back to it.

If you would spend 30 minutes a day commenting on other blogs, researching and writing informational relevant articles, helping others in forums, or passing out business cards your statistics would be skyrocketing.

You are not bettering the performance of your blog by simply checking your statistics, you are in fact hindering it because you are not generating any new methods of increasing performance.

Here are 5 ways to treat your statistics right.

  1.  Check Them Weekly.
  2. That’s right only once a week.  Sit down and analyze what has happened over the past week, with a bigger selection of stats (A weeks worth, not a days) you will be able to better analyze the sites trends.

  3. Set New Goals Every Time.
  4. With your new information on hand you can set appropriate goals by isolating trends and working with them to create new traffic. Then at the end of the next week you can see what worked and what didn’t.

  5. Don’t Brag About Your Stats, Explain them
  6. Gentlemen this goes for you.  Blogging isn’t a pissing contest. Your readers are interested in your statistics, but they don’t need to now how great you are, they need to know how you became great.  Explain to your readers how you found the best paths to success in your site and how you exploited them to create better returns on investments.

  7.  Knowing What You Made Doesn’t Help, Knowing How you made it does.
  8. If you are new to blogging you probably haven’t realized that you won’t be making money right away.  If you are an old blogger you still can’t understand why you got clicks yesterday and not today when you had more visitors.  You can’t predict the habits of your users. Analyze your income methods, see which are performing best and compare them against your other strategies to increase your revenues, don’t just check to see if you made money today.

  9. Spend More Time Writing
  10. This is the easiest one.  If you want to see an increase in your statistics spend more time working on your content.  10 minutes a day will give you view crap and they will eventually realize it.  If you spend more time checking statistics that you do creating good content you soon won’t have any statistics to check.
I know this all sounds a little preachy, but it is a goal I have set for myself as I am one of you. I spend to much time worrying about the performance of my site and not enough time making it perform better.  Your site won’t become a hit if you don’t know why it isn’t a hit.

If you are awesome subscribe to my rss feed.  If you like emails subscribe via email.  Remember only you can prevent forest fires help me acheive my goal of 100 subscribers by June.

It’s Like A Pinata For Bloggers

Friday, March 7th, 2008

 The University Kid

The University Kid is a blog, which I found while he was pariticipating in a rss competition with 4 other bloggers (that he won) and I have grown found of his site.  TUK is a high quality blog about how to make money blogging.  TUK makes daily updates that provide the blogosphere with some serious and quality information about how to market and propel your blog to the next level.  If you are looking into having blogging as secondary or even primary income I would definitely recommend checking his site out.

And if high quality information isn’t enough to wet your pallette then this should be.

As a kid breaking open the Pinata was always the most fun part of the party because at what other time could you have candy and prizes rain down upon you in a blinding fashion. The answer was never, that is until now if you are a blogger. If you don’t know the University Kid, you are about to. He is holding the “ultimate blogging contest” which is no exageration.   Here is the list of prizes he is giving away.

I am shooting for the hour consultation with the kid himself. I would like to tickle his brain for a while, he seems to really have it together. If he didn’t he would never have been able to get this kind of sponsorship.  It is really outstanding.  I believe his web income last month was over $1,000 and he decided it still wasn’t good enough which means he has been working hard to increase it as you can see.  I seem to lack that motivation, or at least the skills to pull something like this off.  I could use the counseling and think I could learn alot from him.

So go check out The University Kid’s Ultimate Blog Contest and make sure you do it from my site cause if I can be one of the highest referrals that will help me win stuff :) .

New Blog Widget

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

For those of you who love to read, which I have to assume is most of you because there would be no other reason for you to come to this site, I have added a new widget to the sidebar that will allow you to read some of my favorite blogs directly from Creadiv.com.

Adam Toren, co-owner & co-founder of www.youngentrepreneur.com pointed this tool in my direction yesterday afternoon while talking to him over the im.  They are trying to use it as a bit of a promotional tool for their site by getting loyal fans and friends to add this widget and their feed to your site.  It is a pretty good idea.  I especially enjoy reading the posts over at ye and think it is a great way to get them some exposure as well as let you guys know a little more about what I am interested in.

So what is this new widget.  If you haven’t already scrolled down the page (home page) to see it, it is  spring widget’s rss reader.

Spring Widget Feed Reader

You can check out the widget for yourself here Yeah, that is right I added my feed in there.  I think you should check it out and add it to your site maybe we can build a little feed network with each other. You know… A you show my feed I will show yours type deal.

Either way even if you don’t add the widget or my feed to your site I think this is  a  pretty great way to let your users understand what drives you a little bit better.

With the ability to read what you read your users may be able to understand your point of view on the topics that you post about better, or even may be able to generate better questions or comments in response to what you have written about.

Take the time to fool around with it, it let me know if you have placed it on your site.  I would love to see my feed in there :)

If you are awesome subscribe to my rss feed.  If you like emails subscribe via email.  Remember only you can prevent forest fires help me acheive my goal of 100 subscribers by June.

I Give Up.

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Well, I don’t. But so many bloggers do.

It is a well known fact that the turnover rate in blogging has to be as high if not higher than any other hobby, career, or job on the planet.  I can’t even take a guess at how many people will start a blog today and never post on it again.  Please tell me if you have quit a blog, what reason did you start your blog and why did you quit?

This is a question I would trully like to know.  Recently I proposed a partnership to a fellow blogger in which he would have an equity stake in my blog by helping me write useful content and marketing the site.  He seemed very gung-ho about the opportunity and I felt like the content he had written for his blog was very good and was certain he would be an asset to this site.  But since his first post I have not received any new content, or even any sort of correspondence from him.

What am I to assume by this?  You are all bloggers and readers of blogs, what do you think is the reason for such a high turnover rate in blogging?

Be Creadiv (Contest)

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

I have been trying to figure out a creative way to get my name out there on the web, and I think I have found the best way to do it.  I am going to ask you to be Creadiv.  I am looking for new readers and subscribers and you publishers out there are the people that can get them for me.   But I can’t go without rewarding the readers so you (average reader) will be getting a reward as well.

What you need to do:

Publishers:

Be Creadiv. The purpose of this competition is to promote my site.  At the end of the competition I want to have a ton of new subscribers, and many of you know how to get them, now you need to get them for me. I want you to come up with the most creative way to promote my site and the person who I feel came up with the most creative way of doing it will win the prize.

What is the prize?

I will be giving a free logo design, one month free advertising, and a free article about you, your site, and the great method of promotion you used to win this competition.

 Readers:

Be supportive.  Subscribe to the site through my feedburner link and let me know you did it.  I will be giving a way a free copy of the cornerstone magazine style template to one lucky reader at the end of this competition as well.

The competition will last until March 10th, unless it takes a while for people to get in to the groove of signing up for it.  I wish you all luck hope that this will generate some interest in my site.

 Until next time.

Adam

Subscribers Sound Off

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

I have been talking alot lately about how my purpose for the next 4 months (until june) is to drastically increase the number of rss subsribers to my site.  But unless I ask for you to subscribe through an rss reader, or my email subscription service, I really have no way of measuring this total.  (Thanks to Distill for pointing this out)

So with my feedburner subscriber count at 3 I am interested to know how many of you there really are.  So please sound off.  This post is simply looking for a comment saying I subscribe and this is how.  I want to know who you are and what your site is.  Maybe it will be of some benefit to me, or we can help each other.

So be like Distill, say yo I am here but not through a feedburner link straight through my browser.  Or maybe you are through a reader, but subscribed without clicking on my feedburner link.

Apparently I need to find a better way of tracking this as well, so if somebody knows one let me know it.

 Adam

What is in it for you? (Ad/Article Contest)

Friday, February 8th, 2008

It is time for my first contest.  I have set a goal for my self of having 100 rss subscribers by June and the best way to get them is to give stuff away.  So without further ado the contest.

What is in it for you?

  •  1 Post advertising or describing anything you want. (written by me)
  •  1 125px by 125px ad spot for a month on Creadiv.com

What do you have to do?

  • Start by subscribing, let me know your out there.
  • Read the articles.
  • Give useful advice on them, debate them, or link me to something useful: be active in supporting this community.

What am I looking for?

Nothing in specific.  I just want this site to grow, and the person that I think has helped me make this a better site by contributing some knowledge, or debating a discussion and bringing life to this site will be the person who gets the prize.

This Contest doesn’t seem like a Contest!

I know…It is a weird concept.  I know… the best contests that attract the highest number of subscibers are the ones where the readers don’t have to do anything.  I know… I know… I know.  But I want to do something different I want to give something away to someone who deserves it, not somebody random.  I am sure to have contests in the future where I will give out random prizes to random people but for now this is about building a good site and with your help it can be done.  So subscribe, read, respond and you may be the owner of a free article about your site, and 1 month’s free advertising.
