Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Our third installation of the mystery of search engine marketing is a continuation on an introduction to the basics.  We have been stressing the basics as much as we are going to stress that actual process of optimizing your site because you cannot neglect the small steps when you are looking at the big picture.

In this leg of our journey we will show you the statistic of where searchers are going to find information.

The term “google it” has become as definable as any other verb in the English dictionary, and there are millions of reasons why.  Those reasons are 44% of the market share for all searches made on the internet.  Google is the market leader. However that doesn’t mean you should ignore the rest of the engines.  44% is alot, but there is still a 56% portion of internet searchers that you would be missing and they would be missing an opportunity to find your products.

The other big players in the market are Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, and Ask.com.

Yahoo! One of the original members in the world of the internet started out as directory where all sites where categorized and entered by hand.  Now Yahoo! has taken on many areas of searching: with still having one of the largest and best directories on the internet, with their expansive resources they have Yahoo! has been able to purchase companies that have helped them become a strong contender in both organic and paid search engine marketing.  Yahoo! currently has a market share of searches at 28%.

MSN, Microsoft’s most popular search engine is being slowly replaced by their newest search engine known as Live.  Microsoft is a big contender in all things software and you should definelty keep an eye out for there share of searches.  MSN currently has roughly 13% or the search engine market cornered.

Ask.com has an smaller share than the rest bringing in 5% of the searches on the internet, but keep an eye out for them to be growing.  With their new marketing plans and more vibrant search pages Ask can become a big contender in the marketplace.

There are several other search engine on the net including business to business, shopping, and music engines that make up alot of searchers stops, but these big 5 are what we are going to concern ourselves with for the time being.

Learning the basics of something can often be boring, yet they are essential to know when you want to accomplish a task.  In part 2 of our series on search engine marketing I am going to tell you about the different types of search results that you will find on the internet.

There are two major types of search results to be found on the internet: organic search results and paid search results.

Organic search results are those that are found naturally by a search engine based off of keywords, and page content.  These types of results are the most used with roughly 60% of all searches having an organic result clicked. This is mainly because they occurred naturally and users are more likely to trust them. Organic search results are therefore very important for your company to have.  In search engine marketing obtaining quality organic search results that have a high ranking is a difficult task, but one we will discuss in detail in later submissions.

Paid search results are exactly as they sound.  You pay an organization to show your link when a keyword is searched.  These types of results are generally found on the right or bottom of a search page and are targeted specifically based on keywords the links creator wanted them to be.  Although these results are not in the majority of the click ratio for search results, their percentage of the market share is growing steady and you will find that have a paid search program will be something that is very important to your company.

Well that wraps it up for the types of search results found on the internet, our next article will cover where searches are going to find there information.  So stay with us in our study of search engine marketing.
