Mac Vs. PC

You know the commercials, in fact whether you are a Mac fan or not you probably like the commercials. They are funny, but are they true? Are PC users stuffy overweight dorks while the Apple user is a hip youngsters with a sharp wit? Well Popular Mechanics put the issue to the test. Not only did they test the performance of the machines but they tested what type of people preferred what type of machine as well.

The results of the test may shock you a little as PC held it’s own weight when it came to the which system was preferred by users. The user ratings came back with Mac only scoring a half a star higher than the PC. Mac’s “famously friendly” user interface ended edging out Microsoft’s Vista in the end but all users found both operating systems to be easy to use and enjoyed them as well. Oh and it wasn’t only stuffy fatties that liked the PC while not all of the hipsters preferred the Mac. So maybe the commercials don’t exactly reflect the truth.

The results of the speed tests, well those are a different story, Mac crushed Vista in the important categories such as startup and shutdown and launching the browsers. Vista did alright on installation times and program launching by keeping up and even beating Mac in a few categories. But when again it came time to test the heavy duty stuff Mac pulled ahead by taking about half the time to launch CS3 with a high stress level on the processors.

So I guess Macs can be considered the better computer. The results of both speed and user performance came back favoring the Mac. If you would like to see the exact stats go grab yourself the May 2008 copy of Poplular Mechanics. They also have the benchmarking software available for download on their site so if you want to perform the test yourself go out and grab the software.

In the meantime tell me what you prefer and why. Because I am a PC guy and Mac users often rub me the wrong way. Pretentious is generally what comes to mind. However it seems like that stereotype may be just as wrong as the commercials.

IE8 Beta 1 Available

This post is a day late and a dollar short being that the internet spreads gossip faster than a fat lady with a cell phone, but I thought it was a good topic of discussion anyway.  If you haven’t gotten it you can find it here.  The download became available yesterday and I have been tooling around in it for the last couple of hours.

It seems pretty nice with a couple of new added features.  However it hates my site which means more work for me.  Creadiv.com crashes it consistently so if you have installed it make sure you are using the emulate IE7 to view creadiv.

The coolest new feature that I have found is called Activities.  Microsoft has inserted a cool new tool the gives you a bevy of activities that you can perform by simply highlighting text on a page.  For example if you wanted to translate this entire post into German simply highlight it and select the translate with windows live activity and there you go.  A completely translated copy of my text.

But it doesn’t quite deliver on its promise of being standards compliant.  The acid2 test is a standards test that will display a smiley face correctly if your browser is 100% standards compliant, and it doesn’t quite work.  There is a definite improvement from IE7 which is Microsoft’s best and most standards compliant browser to date, so that is something.

If you have downloaded the beta and have had the opportunity to use it, let me know what you think.  I am looking too hear what people have to say about it.  I am a IE guy which is probably a saying that makes many of your buttholes pucker do to the new immense popularity of firefox and the intense hatrid of IE that has been forming.  So give it to me. I look forward to seeing what you can tell me about it.

iGoogle. Do You?

About iGoogle

I don’t know if you have heard that google has been slowly taking over the entire world over the last few years, but if you haven’t it is true.

With their plan for world domination they often create cool fun tools for you and I to use free of charge…for the most part.   The one I am finding the most fun and useful at the moment is iGoogle.

According to Google itself iGoogle is …

“iGoogle offers the ability to create a personalized iGoogle page that gives you at-a-glance access to key information from Google and across the web. On this self-designed page, you can choose and organize content such as:

  • Your latest Gmail messages
  • Headlines from Google News and other top news sources
  • Weather forecasts, stock quotes, and movie showtimes
  • Bookmarks for quick access to your favorite sites from any computer
  • Your own section with content you find from across the web “

What that means is that iGoogle is  a one stop shop for all things google and internet.   If you like to have almost everything you want on one site iGoogle is the place to do it.  For example I have 3 tabs on my iGoogle. The first is displaying the 18 rss feeds that I currently subscribe to, the second is my adsense page which shows me all of my adsense information, and the 3rd is my gmail page.

Those are just a few of many gadgets that are available to you on iGoogle, oh not to mention you are still at the site that has the most powerful and accurate search engine on the web.  I guess theres that too.    So enjoy iGoogle and let me know what cool gadget you use to.
